Paramount Confirms 'Star Trek: Season 2' HD DVD Bump

Tags: Street Date Changes, TV on High-Def, Paramount (all tags)

Paramount has set phasers to "delay" for 'Star Trek: The Original Series - Season Two,' confirming speculation that it has pushed back its planned March HD DVD debut to this Summer.

As we reported last November, Paramount had issued an early alert to retailers of a March 25 landing for the original 'Star Trek's second voyage, which (like the first season set) was expected to receive a lavish HD DVD/DVD combo box set with deluxe packaging and tons of extras.

Now we've heard from the studio that the March date has officially been delayed, with the second season now due "sometime this summer," though no new date has been confirmed. (Unofficial word of a delay for this title first surfaced as early as December, when TVShowsonDVD.com first quoted unnamed sources as saying that the studio "needed more time" to prep the release.)

As a full announce isn't expected for several months, there's no further news on specs or supplements. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted.

In light of the delay, we've moved 'Star Trek: The Original Series - Season Two' to the "Release Dates Postponed" section of our HD DVD Release Schedule.

The Discovery Channel is set to hit the high seas next month with the next-gen disc debut of its hit series, 'Deadliest Catch.'

Hot on the heels of strong sales for its dual-format releases of 'Planet Earth' (the re-edited and re-scored US Version) and 'Sunrise Earth,' Discovery will release Blu-ray and HD DVD editions of 'Deadliest Catch: Season 3,' which culls all twelve episodes of the series' third season, chronicling the lives of crab fisherman off the Alaskan coast on the icy Bering Sea.

Like Discovery's earlier titles, 'Deadliest Catch' will be sold exclusively by The Discovery Channel Store, which recently listed both next-gen editions online with a release date of February 4, 2008. (At press time, both titles carried a $59.95 price tag.)

Tech and supplement specs for 'Deadliest Catch' are minimal, with the four-disc set presenting all twelve episodes in 1080i video and Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio. There are no announced supplements

You'll find complete disc details for 'Deadliest Catch: Season 3' linked from our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule, where it's indexed under February 4, 2008.

'Star Trek' Season Two HD DVD Gets a Date

Paramount is preparing to beam the next voyage of 'The Original Series' to high-def this March in another feature-laden box set.

Tomorrow is touchdown for 'Star Trek: The Original Series - The Complete First Season,' the whopping 10-disc HD DVD/DVD combo set that Trekkies have been eagerly awaiting for months. As previously reported, the set includes freshly remastered video and audio (complete with all-new CGI effects), plus hours of extensive bonus features and some of the most swanky packaging yet conceived for a high-def box set release.

Rumors have been swirling for weeks on just when the studio would launch Enterprise crew's second season in high-def, and now TVShowsonDVD.com is reporting that Paramount has just issued a retail announcement of March 25 for 'Star Trek: The Original Series - The Complete Second Season,' which looks to be every bit as extensive as Season One.

Seeing as a full press release is still forthcoming, there are no official specs yet. However, TVShowsonDVD is also reporting that some fans who attended the recent theatrical previews for the Season One box set got a sneak peek at Season Two, which is apparently slated to include another batch of extensive extras including more "home movie" footage shot by 'Trek' alum Billy Blackburn.

No word yet on pricing, but we'll keep you posted as soon as more information is officially announced.

In the meantime, we've added preliminary disc details for 'Star Trek: The Original Series - The Complete Second Season' linked from our HD DVD Release Schedule, where you'll find it indexed under March 25, 2008.

Discovery Channel Goes All-American with 'Sunrise Earth' Blu-ray, HD DVD

Tags: Disc Announcements, TV on High-Def, Discovery Channel (all tags)

Following its high-def release of the US edition of 'Planet Earth,' the Discovery Channel is back with American-themed Blu-ray and HD DVD box set editions of its popular series 'Sunrise Earth' this December.

As we've previously reported, back in April, the BBC released next-gen versions of its phenomenally successful documentary series 'Planet Earth,' which went on to shatter high-def sales records for a box set release. The Discovery Channel later began selling its own re-edited and re-scored version of the show, releasing new next-gen editions exclusively via its online store this past July to further strong sales.

Apparently hoping lightning will strike twice, Discovery Channel is now taking a similar approach with its next high-def release. 'Sunrise Earth: American Sunrise' compiles thirteen US-specific episodes from the popular series, which features breathtaking footage of sunrises across the world, all captured completely in high-definition.

As with 'Planet Earth,' The Discovery Channel's distribution rights to 'Sunrise Earth' appear to be limited to direct sales. As such, the channel recently listed three separate box set editions of the series at Discovery Channel Store. The standard DVD version ($49.95), and both next-gen editions ($59.95 for the Blu-ray and the HD DVD) all show an announced release date of December 4, 2007.

Exact tech specs for 'American Sunrise' were not yet available at press time, but supplements on the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions are set to include the bonus program "Secrets of the Sun," which takes a look at the history of the sun and some of its most recently-discovered secrets. We'll keep you posted as final tech specs are confirmed.

In the meantime, you'll find the latest disc details for 'Sunrise Earth: American Sunrise' linked rom our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule, where it is indexed under December 4.

Universal Says No to 'Battlestar Galactica: Razor' on HD DVD

Tags: Disc Announcements, TV on High-Def, Universal (all tags)

Despite persistent rumors to the contrary, Universal reiterated yesterday that it will not be bringing the 'Battlestar Galactica' telefilm 'Razor' to HD DVD this year.

As we've previously reported, Universal delighted 'Galactica' fans when it announced back in August that it was bringing 'Battlestar Galactica: Season One' to HD DVD December 4, in an extensive box set overflowing with bonus features.

Since then, there have been persistent rumors that the Season One box set would be accompanied by an HD DVD release for the telefilm 'Battlestar Galactica: Razor.' Although the studio has denied these reports before, several retail listings have popped in recent weeks -- most notably at Amazon.com -- that fanned the flames yet again.

Hoping against hope that perhaps the studio had indeed changed its mind, we contacted Universal regarding the recent retail listings. Alas, the studio says that the retail listings are incorrect and that there is no currently-planned HD DVD release for 'Razor.'

On the bright side, the studio isn't ruling out a future HD DVD release for 'Razor,' either as a stand-alone title or as part of a future 'Season Four' box set. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted...

In the meantime, you'll find complete disc details for the HD DVD release of 'Battlestar Galactica: Season One' linked from our HD DVD Release Schedule, where it is indexed under December 4.

Paramount has posted a new promotional video for its upcoming first season HD DVD release of 'Star Trek: The Original Series,' providing a first glimpse at the box set's highly anticipated bonus features.

Hyped as the "Star Trek at your fingertips" in the lengthy eight minute clip, the bonus features on 'Star Trek: The Original Series' certainly promise to be the most extensive seen yet on a Paramount next-gen title, and may well raise the bar for what we've seen so far on a TV-on-hi-def release.

Highlighted specifically in the clip are first looks at the HD DVD exclusive "Star Fleet Academy" interactive picture-in-picture feature, which allows viewers to enhance the viewing experience with new interviews with cast, crew and historians, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes footage and deleted scenes.

Also touted are the new CGI visual effects and score enhancements created especially for this retooled version of 'The Original Series."

'Battlestar Galactica' Blasts Off on HD DVD

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has announced it will bring the original Sci-Fi Channel mini-series and complete first season of 'Battlestar Galactica' to HD DVD in one elaborate box set this holiday season.

The acclaimed cult TV series (now in its fourth and final season on the Sci-Fi Channel) will make its highly-anticipated next-gen bow on December 4.

Featuring the original 2003 mini-series, the full pilot episode and the complete first season of the show, Universal will roll out the high-def red carpet for 'Balltlestar,' in a six-disc set brimming with supplements.

In addition to audio commentary with creator Ronald D. Moore (and guests) on the complete mini-series, pilot and nine additional episodes, extras include more than a half-dozen featurettes, multiple deleted scenes, a still gallery and the "Encyclopedia Galactica," an interactive guide including ships, characters, colonies and flight training manual.

Also exclusive to the HD DVD release will be a picture-in-picture video commentary on the entire mini-series, featuring Moore, cast and crew and additional making-of footage.

Tech specs include 1080p/VC-1 transfers of the mini-series and each episode in 1.78:1 widescreen, plus Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround and Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 surround audio options.

Universal has set a suggested $99.98 for the set.

As always, you'll find full specs for 'Battlestar Galactica' linked from our HD DVD Release Schedule, under December 4. Watch for box art to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Complete 'Heroes: Season One' HD DVD Specs Revealed

Fri Jul 27, 2007 at 12:13 PM ET
Tags: Universal, TV on High-Def, Comic-Con (all tags)

Universal has released the final details for its highly-anticipated HD DVD release of 'Heroes: Season One,' and as promised, it will come jam-packed with extras.

As we've previously reported, the studio had previewed at the Home Media Expo, but it held off on revealing full details until this week's Comic-Con show in San Diego.

Well, the show is here, and so are complete details on the 'Heroes' HD DVD. According to a new press release from Universal, the seven-disc HD DVD set will feature all of the supplements from the standard-def release (including a never-before-seen 73-minute version of the premiere episode, fifty Deleted and Extended scenes, and various featurettes), plus a suite of high-def extras.

Included among the HD DVD exclusives will be a Picture-in-Picture Cast & Crew Commentary (on eight episodes); a "Character Connections" feature, which will allow viewers to isolate scenes featuring their favorite Heroes; an interactive "Helix Revealed" to help fans spot the hidden symbol as it appears in scenes from the show; plus an Artwork Presentation, providing the ability to examine art from the show in detail.

As Universal's first "connected title," the 'Heroes: Season One' HD DVD will also feature several web-enabled features, including a Download Center, which will enable users to download exclusive trailers, clips and other content directly to their HD DVD players; and a Genetic Abilities Test, which will allow fans to create their own Heroes profile and upload it to the Heroes/NBC.com website to unlock yet more exclusive content.

Universal's 'Heroes'-related activities at Comic-Con don't end with this press release. The studio has set up a booth on the Comic-Con floor, where it is demo-ing the HD DVD's various features for fans, and as we've previously reported, a panel with the cast and crew is planned for Saturday. Needless to say, we'll let you know when/if any more details on this highly anticipated HD DVD release emerge.

New 'Star Trek' HD DVD Details Revealed

Tue Jul 10, 2007 at 10:30 AM ET
Tags: TV on High-Def, Paramount (all tags)

Fresh details have surfaced for the highly-anticipated high-def disc release of 'Star Trek: The Original Series,' with the set now expected to include never-before-seen footage exclusive to the next-gen edition.

It was nearly a year ago that Paramount Home Entertainment first revealed plans to release 'Star Trek' on HD DVD, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the sci-fi classic. At the time, the studio said the new release would feature a host of new GGI enhancements, among them redone spaceship exteriors, a rejiggered opening and even a digitally remastered version of William Shatner's classic 38-word "Space, the final frontier..." credit monologue.

Now comes news that the high-def release will also include never-before-seen behind-the-scenes 8mm footage taken during the original production of the series.

Though Paramount has yet to announce an official street date for 'The Original Series,' the just-published program guide for this year's Comic-Con reveals that the studio is planning to give convention attendees a first peek at footage from the long-awaited release on July 26 at a special event dubbed "Star Trek: The Original Series - As You've Never Seen It," which is also slated to include a panel of 'Trek' luminaries.

Strangely, Paramount has made no mention of a Blu-ray release of the series (only HD DVD), although since the studio supports both next-gen formats, we can only assume that the set will ultimately find its way to Blu-ray, as well. More details are expected to be revealed at ComiCon. Watch this space!

In anticipation of an official announcement for 'The Original Series,' we've added the title to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our HD DVD Release Schedule.

'Smallville' Sixth Season Headed to Blu-ray, HD DVD

Tags: Disc Announcements, TV on High-Def, Warner (all tags)

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's 'Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season,' arriving on Blu-ray and HD DVD this fall from Warner Home Video.

Scheduled for a cross-format date-and-date release on standard-def DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD on September 18, Warner says the sixth season of the long-running TV favorite will come with a healthy package of extras.

Both next-gen versions will receive 1080p/VC-1 transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround tracks (with the HD DVD receiving the "Dolby Digital-Plus" designator, though the bitrates on both are equal at 640kbps).

Supplements include four making-of featurettes, an additional featurette on the diehard 'Smallville' cult following, plus a collection of deleted scenes.

In a high-def first,Warner will be making full use of Blu-ray's expanded disc storage capacity, with the Blu-ray version employing four discs instead of the HD DVD's five -- disc specs and extras, however, remain identical.

Warner has set a $79.95 list price for both versions.

'Smallville: Season Six' comes nearly a year after Warner released 'Smallville: The Complete Fifth Season' on HD DVD only (the studio has not yet announced plans for a Blu-ray release of 'The Complete Fifth Season').

We've added new listings for 'Smallville: The Complete Sixth Season' to our Blu-ray Release Schedule and HD DVD Release Schedule, under September 18.
