CES: Samsung Bows New Dual-Format Blu-ray/HD DVD Player
Sun Jan 06, 2008 at 06:24 PM ETTags: CES 2008, Samsung, Dual-Format Players (all tags)
Updating its recently-released BD-UP5000, Samsung says it will introduce the new BD-UP5500 Duo HD player in the second half of 2008.
Like its predecessor, the BD-UP5500 will support both Blu-ray and HD DVD discs, as well as the latest BD-Java and HDi interactivity available (including full support of Blu-ray Profile 1.1).
Samsung says the BD-UP5500 will also feature 7.1 PCM, DTS-HD High Resolution and Master audio, plus Dolby TrueHD Bistream output via HDMI 1.3.
The deck's ethernet connection will enable firmware upgrades and web-enabled features with compatible HD DVD discs. (Company reps tell us the deck will not be BD-Live compliant, meaning it will not support web-enabled features on certain Blu-ray discs.)
The BD-UP5500 is expected to retail for $599, making it the lowest-priced dual format player announced yet. (The BD-UP5000 is currently retailing at $799.)

Samsung: Dual-Format Blu-ray/HD DVD Player Now Shipping
Thu Dec 06, 2007 at 01:00 PM ETTags: Samsung, Hardware, Dual-Format Players (all tags)
Despite reports to the contrary, Samsung says its BD-UP5000 dual-format high-def disc player is shipping "as we speak," and will hit stores at a price lower than previously announced.
Rumors of a delay for the manufacturer's first dual-format player surfaced earlier this week after a listing at Amazon bumped the player's release to January 15, but a Samsung spokesman told Dealerscope on Wednesday that the player is currently shipping to stores, and that it should be on shelves by "mid-to-late December."
The spokesman added that due to "recent activities in the marketplace," the player's suggested retail price has been dropped to $799 (it was originally announced with a $1,049 price tag, but that price was reduced to $999 in early September).
As we've previously reported, Samsung will be the second manufacturer to market an dual player capable of playing HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, following the introduction of LG's BH100 in January of this year.
Samsung says its BDP-UP5000 will support both BD-Java and HDi, as well as web-enabled supplements on both formats, via an Ethernet connection. In late October, the manufacturer noted that the player will require an upcoming firmware update to actually play back Profile 1.1 discs.

Samsung Lowers Price on Upcoming Dual-Format HD DVD, Blu-ray Player

It only seemed like a matter of time before Samsung would lower the MSRP of its upcoming BD-UP5000 Duo HD player to match LG's recently-announced price-cut for their dual format player.
Samsung now says its BD-UP5000 will hit stores sometime in the fourth quarter at a $999 street price -- down $50 from its previously announced MSRP of $1,049.
The price drop is the latest in a series of tit for tat pricing moves between Samsung and LG, who are both marketing dual-format players for the upcoming holiday season.
Samsung made the first move in July, when it announced that its BDP-UP5000 would hit the market priced at $1,049 -- $150 less than LG's BH100 (which had been priced at $1,199 since its launch earlier this year). LG responded in August by announcing its own $200 price drop for the BH100, and now things have come circle with Samsung matching LG's $999 price.
Earlier this week, LG announced a 2nd-Gen dual format player -- the BH200 -- which also carries the $999 pricetag.
Of course, even at $999, all three players remain more expensive than buying two separate standalone players (Toshiba's HD-A2 and Sony's BDP-S300 currently retail at a combined cost of $898), but with the holidays just around the corner, perhaps yet another dual-format player price drop is in our future. Stay tuned...

Hybrid Player Price War Brewing? LG Lowers Price of 'Super Blu' HD DVD/Blu-ray Player
Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 07:55 AM ETTags: LG, Hardware, Samsung, Dual-Format Players (all tags)
With the arrival of Samsung's $1,049 dual-format player on the horizon for this fall, LG has lowered the price of its existing BH100 HD DVD/Blu-ray player by $200.
The first dual-format player to hit stores shelves, LG's BH100 has remained at its original retail price of $1,199 since its introduction earlier this year.
Of course, even at its new reduced price of $999, the LG player remains good deal more expensive than buying two separate standalone players (Toshiba's HD-A2 and Sony's BDP-S300 retail at a combined cost of $898), but it's certainly a step in the right direction.
This latest pricecut from LG comes just a couple months before Samsung's planned BDP-UP5000 is scheduled to hit store shelves. That deck was previously announced with a retail price $1,049. Unlike the LG player, the Samsung is slated to include full support of both BD-Java and HDi, as well as web-enabled features on both formats.
No word yet from Samsung on any price drops for its upcoming BDP-UP5000, but we wouldn't be surprised if it hit the market at something below its originally announced MSRP. Stay tuned...

Samsung has released more information about its upcoming BDP-UP5000 hybrid player, including a targeted release date.
The company said Wednesday that it plans to unleash its new player (which was originally announced several months back) in October or November of this year. Yesterday's announcement was made at a preparation event for the IFA tradeshow in Germany, where Samsung is expected to display the player in late August.
Unlike LG's already released BH100 dual-format player, Samsung says its BDP-UP5000 will support all features of both formats (including BD-Java and HDi, as well as web-enabled supplements on both formats, via an Ethernet connection).
Samsung has yet to announce pricing for its new hybrid player, but it is expected to retail at a lower price than the LG player's current $1199.99.

Samsung Plans Dual-Format Blu-ray, HD DVD Player

In a reversal of its previously exclusive support of the Blu-ray format, Samsung Electronics announced late last week that it is developing a dual-format Blu-ray/HD DVD player, due in the fourth quarter of 2007.
Samsung currently has two Blu-ray decks on the market. The first-generation BD-P1000 launched the format in June 2006, while a second-gen model is due at the end of this month.
Though a hybrid HD DVD/Blu-ray from the company had long been rumored, Samsung had denied any such plans -- until now.
Only a few preliminary details of the new combo unit, which the company has dubbed the BD-UP5000, have thus far been released. The player will support both HD DVD and Blu-ray discs, as well as the competing HDi and BD-Java interactive environments.
Though the BD-UP5000 is not the first dual-hybrid high-def player to be announced -- LG Electronics announced their own hybrid deck, the $1000 Super Multi-Blu HD player, in January of this year -- the Samsung deck is the first to fully support HDi.
No firm street date, nor pricing, is yet available, but the company said it expects to deliver the player sometime in the fourth quarter.
"Consumers are hungry for content but are currently confused about competing formats," Dongsoo Jun, Samsung's executive VP of the Digital AV Division, told Video Business. "Samsung's Duo HD player will allow consumers every [high-def] movie title available regardless of the authoring format. As a member of the DVD Forum and contributor to the DVD industry, we recognize that both HD DVD and BD formats have merits. As such, we have decided to market a dual-format player."
Samsung has also gone further in their newfound support for HD DVD, indicating that they are also open to producing a stand-alone HD DVD player in the future "whenever consumers demand it," said Jun. "Our main concern is not technology but consumer choice."
It is also a move that is already drawing praise from dual-format studios. Warner Home Video, which currently releases titles on both Blu-ray and HD DVD, applauded Samsung’s decision to release the dual-format player.
"We welcome Samsung’s Duo HD players as another solution in the marketplace that will help reduce consumer confusion and buyer hesitancy toward [high-def] media," said Ron Sanders, WHV president. "This is an innovative product that can move us closer to mainstream consumer adoption of [high-def] technologies."
We'll keep you posted as more news on the BD-UP5000 as it comes in. Stay tuned...

"It won't be simple but you'll see our solution in the coming year," said Choi Gee-Sung, head of Samsung Consumer Electronics about the company's plans to Financial Times Deutschland. "Consumers will be too confused otherwise," he added.
